Stephanie Rupertus

2011 Board Elections Candidate Statement:

1.Tell us about yourself, work, beliefs and values and include your experiences and accomplishments with any of the SPFC organizing committees?
I have been involved with the South Philly Food Co-op since the beginning (April 2010). I am an Outreach committee member who enjoys organizing and managing logistics for various outreach events, communications, and presentations. I played a large role in planning the Spring Forum meeting this March and blog for the co-op’s website regularly.

2. Why do you value Cooperatives?
I am extremely invested in my neighborhood and enjoy building relationships with my community. I own a home off Passyunk Avenue and have lived there since September 2008. In addition to volunteering for the co-op, I also work with a small group of neighbors to solve issues of safety, beautification and neighborhood unity. We organize events such as clean-ups, potlucks and large meetings. Finally, I am a site host for Wimer’s Organics CSA and have been for three years. This is a way that I buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.

3. What is your definition of a Cooperative?
I have experience in corporate public relations, communications and training. Most recently, I have gained experience in developing and managing leadership training programs and feel those skills would transfer to and benefit the co-op greatly.

4. What is your vision of growth for a South Philly Food Cooperative?
Where I buy my food and what I eat is very important to me. I was a member of Santa Monica’s Cooperative Natural Grocer while living on the West Coast so I’ve been exposed to a cooperative that has been around since the 1970’s. I understand the difference between our vision for the South Philly Food Co-op and what is realistic for us to achieve in the near future with our current resources. Ultimately I believe in the co-op model and believe we will be a community favorite for organic, local and bulk foods and providing for the health and well-being of people and the environment.
